School to Prison Pipeline

November 15, 2024
Via Zoom
9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Eligible for Board of Social Work CEU's

Workshop

Workshop Description: This workshop will help attendees understand the scope of the school to prison pipeline through statistics and personal narrative, as well as provide some practical solutions to the problems created by this pipeline.  This workshop is also intended to be a space for attendees to process their thoughts with others and ask questions of someone with lived experience.

This virtual workshop will begin with a presentation of definitions and statistics which detail what the school-to-prison is, the policies and procedures that create it and who is most effected by it.  We will then have a time of discussion and reflection.  The presenter will then share his lived experience of the school-to-prison pipeline and detail some possible solutions.  The workshop will close with a time of Q&A and discussion.

Objectives

  • Provide an understanding of the statistical realities of the school-to-prison pipeline as it pertains to race and class amongst students in Minnesota.
  • Provide first hand narrative of how the school to prison pipeline affected the presenter’s life
  • Provide possible solutions to the problems created by the school-to-prison pipeline

Presenter:  Matt Moeller
Matt Moeller was incarcerated at the age of 17 and spent 20 years in prison in Minnesota. It was in prison that Matt was introduced to Restorative Justice, becoming an active member of RJ councils and facilitator of RJ 101 circles. While at Moose Lake prison, Matt, along with several other RJ prisoners, facilitated a program called Inside-Out which taught RJ and Restorative Practices to educators in the Carlton County area.

Matt will share his experience with the school-to-prison pipeline, detailing how punitive practices such as suspension and detention did more harm than good in his educational journey. Matt will also share how he believes implementing Restorative Practices in place of punitive practices in our schools will increase accountability, empathy, and community amongst students and staff alike.
